Milford Hospital's Education Director Receives Outstanding Teaching Award

March 2010

Milford Hospital’s Director of Education, Diane Frankel-Gramelis, was awarded Southern Connecticut State University’s 2009-2010 J. Philip Smith Award for Outstanding Teaching.   Presented to only two faculty members annually, Frankel - Gramelis, who teaches courses in Stress Management and Health Promotion, was nominated by her students for the positive impact she had on their lives.  She was recently nominated for a second time but declined the honor in order to serve on the faculty guided recipient selection committee.

Frankel-Gramelis’ passion for education extends far beyond the walls of SCSU’s classrooms.   In addition to her part-time faculty position at Southern, she is a 12 year full- time staff member at Milford Hospital heading their Community Education Department where she reaches and teaches thousands of individuals each year.  Under her leadership, the Milford Hospital Education Department provides community health screenings,  educational programs, support groups, fitness activities and wellness lectures directed towards improving the quality of health of those in our community.

Among the most popular programs offered through Milford Hospital, Frankel-Gramelis leads an outstanding and dynamic series of informative talks for mothers and their daughters.   A recent participant noted the workshop “gives me a jumping off point for further discussions with my daughter.”   Another added that she “learned that it takes more than a book to teach your child what to expect in the future.”
